Cadmium chloride toxicity is a common endocrine disruptor of adversely affecting reproductive health in rats. The present study investigated the role administration of either D-3-O-methyl-chiro-inositol (D-3-O)orGarcinia hydroxylbiflavonolol1(GB1) in ameliorating toxic effects of cadmium chloride on the reproductive health in Wistar rats.The rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups (n-12). Group A: control was given sterile water; Group B: CdCl2 (2.5 mg/kg/ b.w. day) only; Group C: CdCl2(2.5 mg/kg b.w. day)+D-3-O (2 mg/kg/ b.w./daily) and Group 4: CdCl2(2.5 mg/kg b.w. day)+GB1 (2mg/kg b.w./daily) All agents were administered per os, daily for 90 days. Blood samples were collected from media canthus of the eye and assayed for serum testosterone and malondialdhyde concentration. Semen and testicular tissues were collected to assess for cadmium chloride concentration.Testosterone levels and cGMP activity were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in either D-3-O or GB1-treated groups compared with values obtained in CdCl2 treated group, but lower (P < 0.01) when compared with values recorded in the control group. Both the D-3-O and GB1-treated rats recorded significantly (P < 0.01) lower concentrations of MDA and CdCl in both semen and testicular tissues, compared with corresponding values in CdCl administered groups. However, the concentrations of MDA and CdCl in both semen and testicular tissues in either D-3-O or GB1-administered rats were significantly (P < 0.05) higher compared with values observed in control group. In conclusion, administration of either D-3-O or GB1 to Wistar rats exposed to cadmium chloride improves some indices of reproductive health, such as testosterone levels, testicular functions and cGMP activity.
